Derby Mountain Rescue Team has taken a major step forward in its long-held ambition to create a purpose-built headquarters, with the new facility in Mackworth, Derbyshire set to dramatically improve its operational resilience. A key component of the development is the installation of 1,160m² of Gridforce HL40, a heavy-load ground reinforcement solution provided by Gridforce.
Operating from a rented garage that frequently floods when the River Derwent bursts its banks, the volunteer-run rescue team faced regular disruption to training and emergency readiness. In some cases, floodwaters even prevented access entirely, putting lives at risk and delaying vital services.
Determined to overcome this, Derby Mountain Rescue Team launched a long-term fundraising initiative. Funded entirely through donations and community efforts, the new base is a symbol of perseverance and local support, offering a safer, more reliable operational base for the team..
Gridforce HL40 was the clear choice for the new base’s external areas, delivering a durable and sustainable surfacing solution capable of handling a wide range of vehicle traffic, from emergency response vehicles to short wheelbase forklifts and cherry pickers.
Key Benefits Delivered
Gridforce HL40 not only enhances the site’s functionality but supports the Derby Mountain Rescue Team’s mission with a reliable, long-term ground reinforcement solution backed by a 10-year product guarantee. This installation plays a small but significant role in helping the team save lives across the Derbyshire hills, whatever the weather.
“As a voluntary search and rescue organisation and registered charity, we need to make practical, cost-effective choices that support both our operational work and our long-term sustainability. For the new base in Mackworth, it was important that the driveway and parking areas could cope with regular use by emergency vehicles and perform well in all weather conditions. Gridforce HL 40 offered the durability and drainage performance we were looking for, while also being straightforward to install and maintain. It was a smart, reliable solution that helped us stay on track with our project and meet the needs of the team. We’re confident it will serve our team and the community well for many years to come.”
