When designing parking areas for heavy commercial vehicles, finding a solution that balances strength, durability and cost-effectiveness can be a challenge. For a new manufacturing facility in West Thurrock, Essex, the project team needed a ground reinforcement system capable of supporting everything from daily car traffic to fully laden HGVs, while keeping installation and material costs under control.
To meet these requirements, 4,577m² of Gridforce HL40 has been supplied and installed by Dunton Environmental across several parking areas within the development. Designed to accommodate both lorry and car parking, the reinforced surfaces provide a durable, permeable solution capable of withstanding heavy vehicle movements for years to come.
The square paver cell design of Gridforce HL40 has also enabled the creation of continuous line markings throughout the parking areas. In addition, more than 4,000 demarcation blocks have been supplied to facilitate hatched markings, clearly identifying designated no-parking zones across the development.

The Challenge
As with many commercial and industrial developments, the project demanded a surface capable of withstanding regular heavy vehicle movements while remaining practical and economical to install.
The parking areas needed to support a wide range of traffic, including fully laden lorries, maintenance vehicles and everyday car parking. The contractor had initially been considering a deeper reinforcement product to meet the loading requirements, but this would have increased both material costs and the volume of infill required during installation.
A more efficient solution was needed—one that could deliver the necessary strength and long-term performance without compromising the project budget.
The Gridforce Solution
Following a review of the specification, Gridforce HL40 was selected as the ideal solution.
Designed specifically for heavy-load applications, Gridforce HL40 features a robust 6mm wall thickness and is engineered to accommodate all vehicle types when installed with either a grass or gravel finish. This includes fully laden HGVs, forklifts, cherry pickers, maintenance vehicles and emergency service access.
The product offered the perfect balance of strength, durability and value, providing the required load-bearing performance while offering a significantly more economical alternative to the originally proposed system.
In addition to the lower product cost, the reduced profile of Gridforce HL40 meant less infill material was required, delivering further savings across the installation.
Designed for Faster Installation
Beyond its load-bearing capabilities, Gridforce HL40 also helped simplify the installation process.
Gridforce’s unique lug and slot connection system eliminates the need for fixing pins, allowing panels to be connected quickly and securely on site. To further improve installation efficiency, tiles are supplied pre-connected on pallets, reducing labour requirements and enabling contractors to cover large areas more quickly.
For projects where programme and productivity are key considerations, these benefits can deliver significant time savings on site.
Why Choose Gridforce HL40?
Like all products within the Gridforce range, HL40 has been designed to provide long-term performance in demanding environments.
Key benefits include:
- Suitable for heavy-load applications including HGV parking and industrial yards
- 6mm wall thickness for enhanced strength and durability
- 10-year product guarantee
- Manufactured from Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
- Will not become brittle in low temperatures
- Unique pin-free lug and slot connection system
- Pre-connected tiles for faster installation
- Large UK stock availability for immediate dispatch
- Reduced infill requirements compared to deeper alternatives
The Outcome
The completed parking areas now provide a robust, permeable surface capable of supporting ongoing commercial vehicle traffic while maintaining excellent drainage performance.
By selecting Gridforce HL40, the contractor was able to achieve the required loading specification whilst reducing both product and installation costs compared to the originally proposed solution.
The success of the project has left a lasting impression, with the contractor commenting that Gridforce HL40 will now be their “go-to” product for future heavy-duty ground reinforcement projects.
As industrial and commercial developments continue to seek cost-effective alternatives to traditional hardstanding solutions, projects such as this demonstrate how Gridforce HL40 can deliver exceptional performance, simplified installation and long-term value without compromise.
This project demonstrates how the right ground reinforcement system can reduce costs, simplify installation and deliver long-term performance, even in the most demanding commercial environments.
